Goal of the Project

During the WGD 229 Information Design course through DeVry University in 2018 we discussed the topic of typography in graphic design. After researching the topic, students were to write a research paper and create an infographic design using that research. The design needed to be a concise, straightforward creation to easily communicate information about effective typography.

Research Paper

While taking the Information Design course at DeVry University, I performed researched and wrote the following paper on the topic of Effective Typography for Graphic Design on January 21, 2018. 5 main key takeaways from this research include connecting the font to the audience, limiting the number of fonts used, using the correct alignment for readability, having a clear visual hierarchy of importance, and having readable, legible text.

The link below will load my research paper titled "Guidelines for Effective Typography in Graphic Design" (PDF).

Solution to the Problem

Using Adobe Illustrator CC I created the background gradient design, the border, the color choices and typography. This design in centered down the page for ease of readability and to allow the viewer's eye to easily flow down the page from the largest heading text down to the smallest source text at the bottom of the page. The layout creates a triangle shape between the 3 general guidelines of Choice of Font, Alignment of Text, and Number of Fonts. The layout of this infographic design was finalized using Adobe InDesign CC.

Feedback From Others

"Another wonderful example of your reflections Thomas and your reference to previous principles such as visual design principles really show you are putting your learning to work! Personally I think having three instead of four principles works well.. doesn't have to be exactly balanced to work and spanning one principle across to align to the two principles below is a nice way to add balance to the overall composition."

- Eva Hamburger, DeVry University Instructor (1/2018)

"Tom, Great job again! Your infographic is well organized and easy to follow. I like the color pallet you used. To me, it makes the design laid back and not too formal. It's very inviting. As far as the guidelines in the center of the infographic, personally, I like it the way it is. I think it is still balanced because the top guideline is practically the size of the two below it. I also like how the "g" in "Typography" barely hangs over the rounded rectangle below it. As subtle as it is, it adds just a little bit of depth and dimension. If I had to give you a critique of something to change or work on I guess I would say in the "Choice of Font" guideline I'd add maybe a small line (or something of that nature) under the two headings just to emphasize they are headings. But really that's just me trying to find something to critique. Great design!"
