Goal of the Photo

Upon one of my first visits to the Southwest United States we spend part of a day at Ghost Ranch near Abiquiu, New Mexico. From this location the artist Georgia O'Keefe painted many of her most impressive pieces including the famous hill of Cerro Pedernal. My goal with this photo was to give the viewer a sense of size and perspective to these hills.

Photo Analysis

This photo emphasizes the spacious area of the Southwest. Placing the horizon about 1/3rd of the way up from the bottom leaves plenty of room for the hills and sky. The contrast of blue sky and green grass broken by the browns and tans of the hills in between creates the focal point leading the eye up to the famous Cerro Pedernal flat mesa top. The sparse clouds mimic how few people you see for miles of land stretching in all locations.
