Goal of the Project

In the Fall 2011 semester I had the opportunity to assist an English 101 instructor with the creation of an interactive diagram showing the class argument structure of a persuasive research paper while working as the Media Technologist at Heartland Community College. The instructor wanted a dynamic, easy way to convey how research papers are structured using the metaphor of a house.

Solution to the Problem

The instructor approached me with her idea of using the structure of a residential house as a metaphor for the parts of a persuasive writing assignment or research paper. She provided me documentation for each aspect of the metaphor and allowed me to be creative in the execution of this project.

I created the graphics for the user interface and house diagram in Adobe Illustrator drawing out each component of the house and scene. After this work was agreed upon I proceeded to place these elements into Adobe Flash and added the interactivity using ActionScript code. During each step in the creation of this project I was in contact with the instructor about the direction the project was going.

The instructor was enthusiastic about the final product and used this diagram each semester in her English 101 course for several years. She recognized me for this work with an HCC Award at Heartland Community College in October 2011.

The example of the Classic Argument Structure diagram on my portfolio above is running in Flash using a Flash Emulator called Ruffle. More information about the Ruffle Flash Emulator is available at Ruffle.rs.
